Hi, I'm Dave the founder of getakiwi and my philosophy is simple, work is a means to an end. That end is different for all of us but for most it has something to do with family, friends and loved ones and enjoying life. So that is my aim, not only for myself but for my clients I try to crate a better easier way of doing things that works for you instead of against you.

I travel around the world working from my computer and try not to work more than a few hours a day, and I intend to keep it that way for myself and help others get to that sort  of lifestyle as well. This is my blog, to let everyone know whats going on in my world.

the thing about websites

The thing about a website is that it needs to be unique, websites that just blend into the background noise of the web are worse than useless. So, it needs to stand out, be unique, but it also needs to be current. Any website that is static dies, the web does not tolerate standing still and it certainly will give you no love if you are not evolving to at least some degree.

So, with these two things in mind what can you do to make a website that lives up to these ideals? First of all make your website reflect who you are, if there is one thing in the universe that is unique it is you, so use that to your advantage and give it a flavour that nothing else has, only you can do that. Secondly make it a part of your life, like meal times you need to get in the habit of updating it. Think of it like a TV program, if people switched on the TV and the same thing was on everyday they would quickly stop watching, so keep your site interesting, keep telling a story to your readers, they will reward you for it.

Finally a website doesn’t have to cost you thousands of pounds, we want to offer something different to people. If you want a website with us, as long as you have your domain name (about £10 per year) then you can get one starting at £20 Month, no fixed term and no contract just £20/month as long as you want a website.

So if you have ever wanted a website and were to afraid to try, contact us and you can have it running in no time. We will be posting some examples of the websites we are building for people in this blog in the next month or so to, so look out for that as well.

Are you protected?

There are many different ways of protecting your self these days and it is easy to get overwhelmed, so here are a few tips to getting yourself at least a basic level of protection.

Anti-virus - antivirus software is very important and a computer without it is basically naked against any threat that can possibly come in. There is no excuse that having no anti-virus software on your computer as there are many programs freely available that will give you good protection. Have a look at our blog on anti-virus software and it will give you some good free alternatives that in our opinion work very well. remember also that you should only ever have one anti-virus program installed at any one time as to have more than one can actually reduce your protection.

Antispyware - having software that protects you against spyware and adware etc is almost as important as having anti-virus software. Once again there are a number of free alternatives which do a good job and it actually pays to install more than one as know one piece of anti-spyware software catches all threats. Have a look at our blog on antispyware software to see which ones we recommend.

Registry cleanup software - using a piece of software that cleans up your registry can be quite important especially when trying to get your computer back to full performance. We recommend registry mechanic as it has worked for us for many years without any problems whatsoever. Cleaning up your registry can not only repair errors which are happening on your computer but can also speed up your computer so it is worth having it at your disposal.

Cleaning software - this software funnily enough cleans up junk files on your computer, once again there are many different pieces of software that will do this but the one that we use is called ccleaner. CCleaner is not only free and small but it does a great job of cleaning up all of the rubbish files that build up over time on a computer. If you have never done a cleanup on your computer you may free up as much as 1 GB of space just by using this program so give it a go it is well worth the time.

De-fragmentation software - this software that de-fragments your hard drive, so that it performs better. Many hard drives over time become fragmented and slowdown as a result. With de-fragmentation software you can keep your hard drive functioning at 100% efficiency and often extend its life significantly. The software that we use is called Smart Defrag, its free and it works quickly and in the background to defragment your hard drive.

If you install these five different types of software on your computer and use them regularly you will drastically reduce the chance that you get an infection, so give them a try and let us know how it goes.

the best mouse

If you are looking for a good mouse then take some advice from us. We make our living from working on a computer and some of us spend upwards of 60 or 70 hours in front of a computer every week so you can imagine that choice of mouse is very important to us. we have found that one brand of mouse outperforms all others namely Logitech.

The mouse that we are using at the moment is the Logitech MX Revolution and it is a fantastic cordless mouse, not only is its ergonomical design very easy on you for extended periods of work, but it is reliable and precise in a way that once you have used it you will not want anything else.

Take it from someone who makes their living using a mouse, this one is very special.

Summer in Liverpool

Summer has arrived in Liverpool, over the last few weeks we have had amazing weather by English standards. Unfortunately for us this means that more people are going outside instead of sitting indoors and using their computer, but it gives us the chance to enjoy the good weather ourselves.

So here are a few shots of England in the summer.

Here's to getting rid of that white pasty skin.

York, Jorvik and the Vikings

This weekend we had the chance to go to York, a city in the north of England, and I must say it was a great trip. York is a town with 500 year old medieval pubs, roman ruins from nearly a thousand years ago and an inner city with a castle wall around it, they are even in some places still useing the street plans laid down by the vikings a thousand years ago.

To think that you are sitting in a pub that Guy Fawkes may have had a drink in is quite unique and anyone interested in medieval history would find a wealth of things to look at in York. Hear are a few photos we took on our day around the city, as you can see York put on some beutiful weather for us.

We had a brilliant day and would go back in a second, one day is certainly not enough.

Well back to work today and we have some new developments this week, like the possibility of enabling user log in to our website so that our customers can have a place to go to see a journal of the work we do on thier computer. Just a idea but we think its a good one, let us know what you think.
